Sustainability and Innovation-Guiding Principles for OSI Group’s Sheldon Lavin

A new and powerful wind is blowing through Big Food. Now the world’s largest food providers are working hard to implement sustainable practices across their networks. Following the leadership of OSI Group, the Sustainable Food Policy Alliance and others, the goal is to provide affordable, high quality foods produced and handled in a sustainable manner.

 Sustainable Practices

Eco friendly processes and sustainability, now a driving force within the world’s largest food providers, is not news for OSI Group or their senior management. Sheldon Lavin, CEO of OSI Group began promoting innovation, efficiency and sustainable practices from his earliest days at the helm of what is today one of the world’s largest food providers. Efforts for continual improvement center around OSI’s dedication to food quality, environmental impact and social responsibility. Dedicated policies guaranteeing product safety and strict animal welfare standards allow the group’s European facilities to achieve coveted ISO14001 certification.

Social Responsibility

OSI puts actions in place of talk when it comes to sustainability and providing aid to the community. Hungry children find relief with the groups donations of tons of food to food banks here in the United States and overseas. Contributions from OSI include more than 300,000 tons of foodstuffs shared worldwide. Keeping practices sustainable involves treating livestock in a humane manner. The company spearheads animal welfare initiatives round the world seeking to enhance issue awareness with both the business community and public.

 Innovation

Being a dedicated supplier for McDonald’s restaurants made innovation more than a good idea. It soon became a driving need in order to keep up with their rapid growth. New technologies for storage, flash freezing and food transport again led OSI to industry leadership. Growth in the United States and Europe soon led to expansion into South America, the Philippines and Asia. Strong leadership and core values dedicated to sustainability, safety and innovation continue to guide OSI Group to a future where safe, healthy food produced in a sustainable manner is available to everyone.

OSI Group Leading in Global Meat Production

The quick production and distribution of food is serious business. And one of the biggest food producers and distributors in the world is leading the market when its comes to meat processing. That company, OSI Group, is making big strides when it comes to bringing the world the beef, poultry and pork that they want.

So who is OSI Group? The company is one of the leading food distributors in the world. Starting over 100 years ago as a local butcher operation in Oak Park, Illinois, the food distributor rose to prominence in the middle of the century as the leading ground beef distributor for McDonalds. Today, the company distributes just about every type of food product to thousands of supermarkets, restaurants and convenience stores around the world.

Recently, the company was named one of the top players in the future of meat and poultry processing in the recently published, “Global Poultry Meat Processing Market Research Report 2018.” This outlook is based on several acquisitions made by the company in the last couple of years. One of the acquisitions includes the purchase of the former Tyson Food Plant for $7.4 million dollars in 2016.

In addition to the stateside acquisition of the former Tyson Food Plant, OSI Group also acquired Flagship Europe in early 2018. This European expansion allowed the company to cement its foothold on the global food distribution market. The Flagship Europe acquisition will help the company expand into the Dutch market and consolidate operations overseas.

Today, OSI Group operates 65 facilities in 17 countries. Current CEO Sheldon Levin has been instrumental in the expansion of the company and seeks to further expand the 20,000 strong employee base. The company’s overseas expansion began in 1990 with the establishment of GenOSI, a food processing company based in the Philippines.

While OSI Group is one of the largest food processing and distribution operations in the world, it is also one of the safest. The company has been recognized on multiple occasions for their superior safety record. As recently as 2018, the company was recognized at the International Safety Awards with a merit award.
